Lost village of Thorns

May 6, 2026 @ 11:00 am - 4:30 pm

Free event starting at the Ribblehead Visitor Centre with an introduction and exhibits from 11am. Cafe open 9am – 4pm. The 6 mile walk leaves from the station yard following our introduction and talk on ‘The effect of the railway on the environment’. The limestone landscape leads us towards the drovers’ route passing through Thorns; both casualties of the railway and a changing landscape. Return over the shanty site tramways passing the viaduct and then go for the train home.

Guided Walks

Our free guided walks date back to the earliest FoSCL campaign aimed at preventing closure of the Settle–Carlisle train line, and offer a chance to explore the area, and discover a less well-beaten path with others.
