Special Event, Sunday May 3rd, St Leonard’s church, Chapel-le-Dale

May 3, 2026 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

We celebrate 150 years of the Settle – Carlisle line by remembering the railway workers who built it, men women and children. Many from Ribblehead are buried here at Saint Leonards but this is in memory of all those who were employed in providing the scenic line through the dales, and on to Carlisle, that we still love today.

1.15pm

Arrive for Settle Graveyard Projects ‘Mysteries in the Graveyard’.
This is an outdoor event. Approximately 1hr.

2.45 Memorial service

Rev, Peter Greenwood. Approximately 1hr.

As part of this and in memory of all those employed on the Ribblehead section, FoSCL Footsteps in Time worked with the Church and the diocese to obtain permission to clean the gravestone of Job Hirst . Discover who he was on May 3rd and his importance to the building of the line and the iconic viaduct. The photos are the before and after of the specialist clean by local stonemasons. The inscription can now be read along with the original mason’s mark.
