Experience the Settle-Carlisle Line with our On-Train Guides

The Friends’ On-Train Guide Team is here to make visitors’ experience of the line both memorable and well informed.

The main task is to host pre-booked tour parties, but we also ride selected trains through the week in summer, talking to any passenger who wants to learn more about their journey. On request we can also provide guides to small groups making the ride as a birthday or anniversary treat.

You can find details of trains where guides will be on board here: https://settlecarlislerailway.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/On-Train-Guides.pdf

Hear about our north-country rivers, the Ribble, the Eden, the Ure and the Eamont, and the geology that shaped our landscape – the Dales, the Three Peaks and the North Pennines. Learn how to spot a Shake Hole, or tell a Clint from a Gryke on the Limestone Pavements. Gypsum, Coal and Dent Marble also feature! And of course we will make sure you don’t miss any of our magnificent viaducts (not just Ribblehead)! We will be around to help….
