Gruesome Goings On at Ribblehead

September 8, 2026

Something spooky is coming to Ribblehead Station Visitor Centre for Halloween … a ghostly conversation between two navvy wives and the coroner from 1876 Thomas Parkinson Brown.

Between them they will discuss some of the darker and more gruesome events that took place during the construction and early operation of the Settle-Carlisle Railway.

Do you want to hear about the drunken navvy who never made it home from the ale house, well not in one piece anyway …. or the key role of Robert Holland as local undertaker until his rather unpleasant death due to typhoid and ulcerated bowels ….

It could get a little bit gory in places so it’s not for the fainthearted but it will be a very different experience!

It has been developed by the incredible Sarah Lister, local historian and author, who runs Settle Graveyard Project and will therefore all be factually correct and fascinating but put across in a bit more of a dark and ghoulish way!

Tickets are on sale in our online shop or in person at Ribblehead Tearoom now and numbers are limited so book early to avoid missing out
