Points of Interest:

• Appleby Tourist Information Centre near the bottom of Boroughgate (the main street) is a great place to find what’s available, see: https://visitappleby.com/tourist-information/
• Appleby Horse Fair:  Held in June each year and dates back to 1685: its Europe’s largest annual gathering of Irish, British and  Romany travellers’ community.   It is a cultural event where horses are washed in the river and travellers use traditional painted caravans known as Vardos.
• Appleby Castle: Now a historic hotel set withing in the Eden Valley. This motte-and-bailey fortress built by the Normans. The keep is one of only three complete and intact Norman keeps in the country. The grounds are open to the public during spring and summer and offers guided tours . Its most famous resident being Lady Anne Clifford. There is an immersive museum dedicated to the history of the Normans in Britain
• Notice the commemorative  plaque on the Station’s platform to Bishop Eric Treacy: renowned railway photographer and the Lord Bishop of Wakefield who loved steam locomotives.  The plaque marks the spot where he tragically died while waiting to photograph the steam locomotive which was on a special rail tour.
• Visit the Almhouses which are in the high street and see another legacy of Lady Anne Clifford.
• Historic Town Centre which has a wide tree lined street, 16th Century Moot Hall and St Lawrence Church.
• Honorary ‘Quidditch Town’ in the Harry Potter world representing the Appleby Arrows.
• George Washington father attended the local grammar school.
