Lazonby and Kirkoswald

These two villages which sit about the River Eden are predominately made from red sandstone. The S&C railway track runs through the village of Lazonby. A mile away the lovely church of St Oswald in the village of Kirkoswald is situated.

Lazonby meaning: Old Norse ‘Freedman’s farmstead’.

Kirkoswald: named after a 7th Century King of Northumbria.

Points of Interest:

  • Visit the 18th Red sandstone church of St Nicholas in Lazonby right next door to the railway.
  • Visit the Community Open Pool (Open in Summer).
  • Visit Lowther Castle and Gardens, adventure playground: 28 mins drive.
  • Drive to Rheged Centre: 19 mins drive.
  • Penrith: local/independent shops. Market Day every Tuesday.
  • Midland Hotel/ Pub next to the Railway station.
  • Long Meg and her daughters.
  • Walk along the River Eden.
  • The railway station is rumoured to be haunted by the a Victorian stationmaster who never left his post!
