Settle

Settle Station is at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales A market town full of independent shops. The heritage station still looks like it did in 1896. Stand on the Railway Bridge at the station and take in the views which surround you: can you spot Pen-y-ghent and Giggleswick Chapel on the hill plus Settle Water Tower which is now a private home but once fed water to steam trains travelling along the line. Next to the Water Tower take a look at the Midland Railway type coal truck that is over 100 years old and restored by volunteers and supporters of the Settle-Carlisle Line.

Visit the Market Place.
Charter Market: Chartered by King Henry 111 in 1249 held every Tuesday.
Visit the Folly Museum: The Folly is a grade 1 listed gentry house. Built in 1679 as a gentleman’s residence and a lawyer’s office. Now it is the home of North Craven Building Preservation Trust and Museum of North Craven Life and the The Folly Cafe.
Watch trains travel over the viaduct just off the market place.
Visit Holy Accession Church: try a Graveyard Tour.
Walk in the steps of Elgar: Buck House: A grade II listed Georgian merchant house built around 1787. Charles Buck born in Kirkgate, Settle studied medicine in Manchester then qualified in 1875 and worked as a general practitioner in Settle. Dr Buck was a musician and met Edward Elgar in 1882: Elgar visited Settle until the early 1900s.
At the Station: Visit the Heritage Signal Box: a working Museum: ring the bells and pull the levers and learn how trains on the Settle-Carlisle Line still move from one section to another today: Open on Saturdays.
